SPC continues to deliver protection to the water industry

SPC is proud to announce that its accreditation with the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has been renewed. This means that all of SPC’s paint treatments meet the DWI standard, and that we are certified in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland via the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

The DWI was formed in 1990 to provide independent reassurance that the water supplied in England and Wales meets the legal cleanliness standards, and that the quality of the drinking water is safe for people to drink.

For a number of years SPC has been working with businesses that supply specialist vessels to water utility companies. The water industry relies on vessels, pipes and treatment facilities to deliver clean water to the public. However, the entire infrastructure is susceptible to corrosion, which in turn, can compromise the quality of the water, making it unsuitable for public consumption.

SPC regularly applies specialist protective coatings to the both the internal and external surfaces of water containment vessels. The external specification requires a three coat epoxy system to the metal surface of water vessels, which acts as a corrosion inhibitor, extending the service life of the equipment. 500 Microns of DWI approved solvent free epoxy are also applied to the internal surfaces of water vessels.

These specialist coatings will decelerate the corrosion process which can occur as a result of a range of factors including chemical reactions, contaminants in the water, poor surface preparation, water pH and temperature. Implementing specialist corrosion protection is essential to safeguard water vessels in the drinking water industry and maintain public health standards.

The renewal of the DWI accreditation enables SPC to continue providing specialist coatings to its clients. Recently we successfully treated another water vessel for AJ Metals, which will be used by a water utility company to deliver clean and safe drinking water to its customers.

Paul Whiting, Director at Specialist Protective Coatings, said “We were delighted to work with AJ Metals on this latest project for the water industry, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all of the specialist protective coatings that we provide meet the DWI standard.”
